There is a Buddha for long life (Sanskrit: Amitāyus, Tibetan: Tsepame) which is basically the same as the Buddha Amithabha (Tibetan Öpame – see last week). A Buddha for developing compassion (Avalokiteśvara) and one for wisdom (Mañjuśrī).
Then what Buddha can we turn to in case of illness? For this we can turn to Bhaiṣajyaguru (or Bhaiṣajyaguruvaiḍūryaprabhārāja – Medicine Master and King of Lapis Lazuli Light) the blue form of Medicine Buddha (Tibetan: Sangs rgyas sman bla – Sangye Menla).
In Tibetan Buddhism, the Medicine Buddha not only helps to overcome disturbing emotions (attachment, hatred and ignorance) but also physical ailments. By reciting the mantra of Medicine Buddha over a glass of water, the water will gain the blessing and may aid in the healing process.
Medicine Buddha is also known as the Buddha of the Eastern Pure Land of Vaiḍūryanirbhāsa (Pure Lapis Lazuli).
